The year of 2025 was a pivotal year for the Seattle region and for The Urbanist. Voters elected more urbanists to office than ever before. We scored significant housing victories and repealed or eased parking mandates in a number of cities. As these stories unfolded, The Urbanist was on the scene, with leading coverage that boosted advocacy efforts and drew the connections that helped fit the story into a larger narrative about what makes cities work and thrive.

At the start of the year, things were not looking particularly promising for urbanists. America had just elected a corrupt autocrat with a fetish for fossil fuels, suburban sprawl, and turning back the clock on racial progress. Seattle’s mayor was preaching placation and collaboration rather than pledging to stand up and fight back.

Like Trump, Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell appeared disinclined to tax the rich, or challenge the status quo of car-centric streets, parking mandates, and apartment bans pervading much of the city. Harrell’s housing growth plan arrived both late and severely watered down, like many major initiatives in his administration, and he opposed a funding measure for Seattle’s fledgling social housing development authority, which was put forward by grassroots advocates and passed by a wide margin despite the mayor’s efforts.

Nonetheless, the pundit class considered Harrell a shoe-in for reelection — too well-funded to fail.

But, an amazing thing happened over the remainder of 2025. Transit Riders Union leader Katie Wilson emerged as a viable urbanist alternative to Harrell and she rode into office in November on a wave of enthusiasm, largely from tenants, urbanists, and younger folks sick of being shut out of financial stability in Seattle’s supercharged market for housing, childcare, education, and other basic necessities. In addition to 15 years of organizing for progressive change, Wilson’s credibility was built on her thoughtful writing, including a “Policy Lab” column in The Urbanist.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="771" data-attachment-id="198568" data-permalink="https://old.theurbanist.org/2025/07/29/poll-shows-harrell-is-vulnerable-wilson-rolls-out-labor-support/katie-wilson-at-city-hall-steps-union-presser-trumm-20250717/" data-orig-file="https://old.theurbanist.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/07/Katie-Wilson-at-City-Hall-steps-union-presser-Trumm-20250717.jpg" data-orig-size="1280,964" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"created_timestamp":"1752740364","orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Katie Wilson at City Hall steps union presser &#8211; Trumm 20250717" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>On July 17, Seattle mayoral candidate Katie Wilson rolled out the endorsement of PROTEC17, a labor union representing more than 10,000 city workers in the Seattle region. Momentum continued to build from there on the path to a narrow election victory. (Doug Trumm)

While Wilson’s victory was a squeaker, other Seattle urbanists dominated against weaker opponents. Resounding victories for Eddie Lin and Dionne Foster mean urbanists have picked up two seats on the Seattle City Council. These wins could swing outcomes toward housing abundance as Seattle takes up phase two of its growth plan in 2026. Likewise, Seattle has more champions for transit and safe streets at the helm as the City contemplates a renewal package for the Seattle Transit Measure, set to go before voters in 2026, and decides how to invest transportation levy dollars.

Outside of Seattle, urbanists made big strides, too. Progressive urbanists swept the Burien election, winning control of a city council that had fallen to regressives hellbent on scorched earth policy to dealing with homelessness. Urbanists beat back an anti-housing backlash in Kirkland, winning three of four races, and dispatched a similarly regressive effort in Woodinville.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="574" data-attachment-id="199218" data-permalink="https://old.theurbanist.org/2025/08/19/progressives-poised-for-burien-council-takeover/burien-council-2025-progressive-slate-via-devito-campaign/" data-orig-file="https://old.theurbanist.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/08/Burien-council-2025-progressive-slate-via-Devito-campaign.jpg" data-orig-size="1280,717" data-comments-opened="0" data-image-meta="{"orientation":"1"}" data-image-title="Burien City Council 2025 progressive slate via Devito campaign" data-image-description="" data-image-caption="<p>The progressives running for the four Burien City Council seats up this year have the upper hand, based on primary results.
Organizationally, The Urbanist has never been stronger, as we integrated more members into our team and reinvigorated our programming. In January, Diego Batres joined our team as Director of Events and Development and set to work expanding our events offerings, hosting nearly 40 for the year, and working on a wide variety of other projects. One thing we have up our sleeve for 2026 is a website overhaul with new features for subscribers, thanks to Diego’s tireless efforts.

At its core, however, The Urbanist will remain a trusted, independent news source with no paywall. To make that feasible, we rely on reader support. Please keep us in your year-end giving plans and consider becoming a member or upping your monthly subscription.

However, readers can make tax deductible contributions to our 501(c)(3) supporting organization, The Urbanist Fund, which can also benefit from corporate matches.

Thanks to steady reader support for our freelance program, Amy Sundberg also expanded her beat as our public safety and city hall reporter. And of course, our Contributing Editor Ryan Packer continues to be this region’s go-to reporter for transportation and housing issues and all the shades in-between, serving as a watchdog for an astounding number of local city councils and agencies. Overall, we produced more than 600 articles in 2025 and set new readership records.

Even with all that output, we still could not get to all the stories happening across the region. One goal we have for 2026 is to hire another reporter to help us reach more stories.

We have big plans for 2026 and we have huge opportunities with a growing group of allies in office. But it takes resources to keep reporting and trumpeting the virtues of urbanism. With your help, you know we’ll keep sleuthing and sounding the horn.

The Urbanist is having a handful of events as the year comes to a close, including our end-of-year holiday party! Tickets are limited, with only 20 remaining to secure a spot at our VIP Reception.

We’re also restarting our monthly socials after a hiatus during election season. While the rest of the year will be relatively quiet on that front, the process will continue into next year, and it will be important to keep up pressure on the new city council and build momentum.

Finally, the Washington Institute for a Democratic Future, an organization dedicated to educating the next generation of political leaders, is hosting an election breakdown and recap on November 20.

When I joined the board of The Urbanist, it wasn’t just because I care about buses, bike lanes, or housing. (I do.)

It was because The Urbanist represents something rare and essential: a belief that our city can be better when we work together.

At a time when national politics feels paralyzed by fear and division, local action matters more than ever. Supporting The Urbanist means choosing optimism. Choosing facts. Choosing community.

It’s about more than policies or plans. It’s about believing in a Seattle that welcomes more people home, connects more neighbors safely, and builds a future that’s greener, fairer, and more resilient.

When you donate or become a member, you’re not just helping fund journalism or advocacy. You’re sending a signal. You’re raising a small but powerful flag. And, this donor drive, that flag can be a simple wool beanie that says: I believe we can do better, together.

In a world that too often pushes us to despair, The Urbanist gives us reasons to hope and tools to act. If you believe that, too, I hope you’ll join me. Become a member. Make a donation. (And yeah, grab the beanie.)

Let’s build the future we want, starting right here, together.

Get your Urbanist beanie with a qualifying donation.

Today, we’re kicking off our two-week member drive, where we ask readers to chip in so we can sustain and grow our operation. This drive we’re also offering a new perk: Make a qualifying donation and score an Urbanist beanie. Read on to see how.

The Urbanist has grown a lot from its humble beginnings in 2014. From an all-volunteer organization of dedicated housing policy wonks, urban planners, and writers putting out an article every few days to full-time staff putting out multiple articles a day, hosting happy hours, panels, and endorsing candidates.

We are not done growing. Whether we are reporting, leading the advocacy charge, or building community, we want to make our vision for the region a reality: abundant housing, safe streets, ubiquitous rapid transit, and a strong, just, decarbonized economy. To do this, however, we need your support.

Support The Urbanist

Seattle suburbs are a hotbed of urbanist potential, with city council seats up for grabs, light rail expansions, and ambitious housing proposals projects being announced. Shoreline, Montlake Terrace, and Kenmore are seeing a wellspring of grassroots urbanism and seeing victories like ditching parking mandates and increasing safe bike facilities alongside their rapid transit expansions. We want to be there for all of it, but it takes resources.

Our growing team and scope

The Urbanist hired its first full-time staff in 2018 thanks to the generosity of our readers. Since then, through a combination of ad revenue and generous subscribers, we have expanded to the full-time staff: Doug Trumm, our publisher; Ryan Packer, our contributing editor; Diego Batres, our (new) Director of Development and Events.

Doug and Ryan’s work is evident from the articles that go out every day, and the rapidly expanding events program is a testament to the capacity that Diego is adding to the team. In addition to our full-time staff, The Urbanist has several regular freelance reporters, as well as volunteer writers who generously submit their work to us.

To truly become a regional publication, we need to expand our coverage – deeper reporting on the Eastside and North Sound, across the water to Kitsap County, south to Tacoma, and even further down in Olympia. That means expanding our capacity – whether through more freelancers or hiring another part or full-time reporter.

So please, if The Urbanist has informed you, entertained you, challenged you, or educated you, if you find yourself looking at our endorsements, coming to our events, or using us as a resource in your advocacy, support us by becoming a member. We need reliable month-over-month income to make investments in the future of our publication and community.

Support The Urbanist

And if that isn’t enough, as a limited-time bonus for this subscriber drive, we are offering Urbanist merch!

The Urbanist had a very big year in 2024, and we don’t want to let up. We want to go into 2025 even stronger. So, we are throwing a mini drive asking readers to include us in their year-end giving plans.

Donate today!

Note that we have a newly minted “The Urbanist Fund” 501(c)(3) supporting arm that is able to accept tax-deductible gifts.

The Urbanist just celebrated its 10th anniversary. More than 100 supporters turned out at our celebration in First Hill, which meant the world to our team. Thanks to your support our team keeps growing.

In the first year we employed a full-time staff reporter, Ryan Packer certainly did not disappoint. Of our top 10 most read articles of 2024, five were by Packer. They dominated the transportation beat and also posted strong articles in a host of other issues, including housing, land use, parks, and the minutia of regional planning, spanning the entire metropolitan area in the process.

If you’re anything like me, they’re the first reporter I turn to when I want to fully digest what’s going on in the city around me and why. Packer’s work is complemented by freelancer and volunteer contributions. Amy Sundberg become a monthly staple, focused on the public safety beat in a time when rhetoric is flying around aplenty but evidence-based proven solutions seem to be in short supply.

We’re also excited to welcome to announce our third full-time employee next month to staff our new development and events director position. Expect an announcement introducing that hire soon. The new position will help us expand our events programming in 2025, as well as continuing to build capacity to expand our staff and our coverage.

We set a new readership record in 2024 as we published 585 articles and counting.

Already our stories covering cities outside Seattle is growing, which can create a virtuous cycle as we publicize the exploits of urbanist leaders in cities like Bothell, Shoreline, Kirkland, Tacoma, Bellevue, and Redmond. That coverage helps build momentum for yet more urbanist exploits. Rinse and repeat!

Perhaps nowhere is this trend more dramatic than in Bothell, where Mayor Mason Thompson has new allies on the Bothell City Council. Collectively, the group is poised to add safe streets and housing projects, increasingly turning this Eastside suburb into an oasis, centered around its pedestrianized main street and downtown linkage to the Sammamish River Trail and the growing regional trail network beyond.

Urbanists are also flexing their muscles at the state level, and our expanding coverage of the state legislature is helping advance the cause.

Our coverage of the state’s plan to drop a key trail tunnel from the SR 520 Portage Bay and Roanoke Lid project. We broke the story, highlighting that the move would only save about $10 million or 1% of the massive highway project’s budget, while compromising road safety. We proceeded to amplify an advocacy campaign that sprung up to oppose the cut. Within months, the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) had backed off the cut; the Harvard Avenue trail tunnel was saved.

Urbanists helped fight for statewide minimum standard for middle housing, which is pushing medium-sized and large cities to phase out single family zoning in favor of multiplexes via their Comprehensive Plan updates due by the end of this year. If effected cities fail to do so, the state’s model housing code will take over in July 2025. By the way, The Urbanist pushed the state to improve its model code to truly foster housing creation and housing diversity.

Some cities have shown more enthusiasm for embracing middle housing citywide than others. Unfortunately, Seattle has been one of the more tentative and will need until the summer to finalize its plan. But slow in coming together doesn’t necessarily mean it will be a bad plan. Thanks to pressure from housing advocates, the Harrell Administration has improved the plan with more housing options and capacity. That didn’t happen by accident.

Half of the Neighborhood Centers and the transit-oriented Corridor upzones proposed by OPCD disappear in the Mayor’s April draft proposal. An October revision added five more Neighborhood Centers, following pushback. (City of Seattle)

The Urbanist was also first to reveal that Seattle planning staff had proposed in 2023 a “One Seattle” 20-year growth plan with much more housing capacity and diversity before Mayor Bruce Harrell’s team intervened to water down and delay that proposal. We ran a series of articles that laid out the drawbacks of going small and covered the ways the pro-housing movement was pushing back and urging the City to pursue the original “housing abundance map,” which had been buried from public view until we published it.

Readers can continue to track the One Seattle housing growth plan saga here.

We want to cover even more stories in 2025.

Growing our staff and supporting a larger paid freelance writer program would allow us to broaden our work and ensure our masthead is built to last. Currently, our budget allows us to accept about ten articles per month from freelancers, but greater resources would allow us to expand that program. Donate today!

The Urbanist has switched to a new donor platform that has more features for subscribers, like being able to adjust your credit card yourself.
That said, we recently launched a 501(c)(3) supporting org for the first time ever, which is able to accept tax deductible gifts. Visit The Urbanist Fund website for details and email us with questions at info@theurbanistfund.org. We are only able to support one-time gifts through at The Urbanist Fund at this time. The Urbanist Fund should qualify for more company match programs given its 501(c)(3) status.

Reflecting on our 10th anniversary, Owen Pickford, the founder of The Urbanist, shared: “Seattle urbanists can be thankful for many incremental wins over the last decade. But many urbanists may also feel discouraged. 10 years [after founding The Urbanist], the root problem still seems the same.”

Pickford continues, “Would you know about these losses without The Urbanist? Would you know about solutions?” Over the last decade, it has become clear that our community needs “an explicit and sustainable urbanist media outlet.” Our community needs The Urbanist.

As we celebrate this significant milestone, we want to express our gratitude to everyone who has supported The Urbanist over the years. Your dedication and passion have been instrumental in driving positive change and making our region a better place to live. And much work remains to be done. Together, we can build a brighter future.
